解説

Two lovers are seated on steps in front of a tavern. The woman dips a biscuit into the wineglass held by her partner. The couple are attended by a black servant. There are more drinkers seated behind them. Beyond is the portico of a 'palazzo', with a terrace in front of it, upon which is a statue inspired by Michelangelo's I/I (Paris, Louvre).This picture was probably painted in the early 1660s when the painter was collaborating closely with his father, Jan Baptist Weenix, who devised this type of Italianate genre scene.
