解説

The identification of the man as Girolamo Fracastoro (born 1472) was suggested by a strip of paper once stuck on the canvas (bottom left), it read: '[D]ottore Fracastoro', apparently a reference to the poet Girolamo Fracastoro whose most famous work was a poem on syphilis.
